BRC Buzz - Summer 2020

Our mission is to provide affordable and accessible recreational and competitive rowing programs for youth and adults as a means to promote the sport, foster teamwork, encourage physical activity, and healthy lifestyle.

Summer 2020 - Safety, Singles, and Solving Problems

Summer is usually a season for relaxing and recovering after a busy spring season, but this year is our busiest programming summer yet!  Big shout-outs go to Kate Hebdon who makes it all possible with her incredible "program and schedule Tetris" skills and to Matt Hebdon for repairing the constant stream of broken singles and keeping our more than 50 summer rowers on the water.

Community Updates

Welcome New Teammates and Coaches!

A big BRC welcome to Coach Miriam!  Miriam Levenson rowed at Robert Morris University and is coaching the July Learn to Scull program!

Congrats to our youth rower Lauren for recently committing to the University of Alabama!  Roll Tide!

Welcome Sha McBride as our Outreach Lead on the Board of Directors!

Thank you to Jude Starrett and Rob Kleinderlein for your many years of service on the Board!

Jude is one of the founding directors of BRC and served in many roles including VP, President, Communications Coordinator, and on the Executive Committee.  Rob helped to grow the fleet and share best practices from other clubs as the Equipment Liaison.  Their contributions to the BRC family have been invaluable, and they are still very involved as active rowers and volunteers!

Jude and Rob are succeeded by Morgan Stewart as Communications Coordinator and Tom Bailey as Equipment Director

Scholarships and Outreach

Along with USRowing, we commit to making diversity, equity and inclusion a priority.  We have long hoped to extend rowing to underrepresented groups in the Charlotte area. With the Black Lives Matter movement, we decided we needed to increase our efforts. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we have begun to solicit scholarship funds from our rowers and have enough to support some participants this summer, and possibly into the fall. Our BLM scholarships are specifically geared to participants who are from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in the sport. We also have regular scholarships for those with financial need.

How to Donate:  Please send any checks to Jeanne Nugent (BRC's treasurer, [email protected]).  Be sure to indicate whether it is for a designated scholarship fund or the general scholarship fund.

Do you know any groups we should connect with?  Let us know at [email protected]

Get Involved - Outreach Committee

If you are passionate about our mission and connecting with the community, please consider joining the outreach committee!  Contact [email protected]

Due to Covid we delayed and revamped the ROAR program. We were able to begin in June with primarily single sculls and have had at least 10 cancer patients/survivors participate. Huge thank you to the BRC family who have facilitated their learning to row.

New! QuickStart Sculling

BRC has created a QuickStart program that is a 2-hour beginner group lesson great for families or groups interested in trying the sport - for only one night.  It costs $50/person with a minimum of 3 signups (4 -5 preferred, 5 - 6 available if one is a pair).  If you want to set up a QuickStart for your group, let Coach Kate know! ([email protected])

Equipment Updates

  • New (to us) Men’s Heavy 4+: 2004 Pocock Hypercarbon K4

  • New wheels and velcro installed in rec singles

  • New rec single (temporarily named "Butter")

A note from Coach Matt: "Please wipe down the interior of boats, including the tracks.  There is no such thing as “slide grease”; the dark stuff is oxidation and wheel plastic grinding down due to grit."

Site Update

After a delay of several months to address neighbor concerns, the City Council on June 15 approved the latest site plan for the new park and the accompanying amendment to our agreement.  We just received the updated survey incorporating those changes, and will be meeting with Duke Energy soon to get the all clear to start the FERC process.

Learn to Scull

LTR/LTS for August has been converted to all sculling to support current COVID-19 safety standards.

Youth Summer Camps

Our June and July camps are a popular summer activity!  The August camp has been converted to a sculling camp and is nearly full.  We are hoping to fill the remaining spots from our outreach partner programs, but they may be released to the general public in two weeks if not filled.

Youth Summer League

Our experienced youth summer league has been a massive success in June and July!  If a practice is cancelled due to external circumstances, please sign up to attend a Thursday make-up session so we can assign boats and prepare for practice.
